We viewed select scenes from A Star Is Born to explore how the film portrays the main character’s struggle with addiction and his journey toward (and challenges within) recovery. Participants reflected on the emotional and personal impact of these scenes, drawing connections to real-life experiences with addiction, resilience, and healing.
Through guided discussion, we examined:
How addiction affects not only the individual but also relationships and career.
The importance of support systems in recovery.
The internal and external challenges of maintaining sobriety.
The ways shame, hope, and love intersect in the recovery process.
Art Activity:
Participants created artwork inspired by the themes in the film—using painting, collage, or drawing to represent:
Personal struggles and turning points.
Sources of strength and support.
Visions of a healthier, more balanced future.
Outcome:
By combining film, art-making, and open conversation, we created a comprehensive and supportive environment where participants could:
Engage meaningfully with recovery themes.
Share their own stories in a safe space.
Draw inspiration from each other and the film’s narrative.
Reflection Prompt:
What part of the film resonated most deeply with you, and how did your art reflect that connection?
